This year’s particularly brutal winter has made life difficult for ranchers all over Montana. Extreme weather can kill young calves in as little as 10 minutes and to farmers who rely on their livestock for income, each calve lost can end up being a $1000 hit to the bottom-line.
While ranchers expect to lose a calf or two each season, the extreme winter weather can present quite a challenge to farmhands who need to be able to reach, feed and take care of their animals.
Extreme weather isn’t the only danger ranchers also have to watch out for either as predators often wait for birthing cattle to stray from the herd. Calving season presents its own unique challenges to ranchers and blizzard conditions are making this season a particularly difficult one.
