The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ annual report on Jails in Indian Country was released, and the numbers are alarming. The Lame Deer jail was built to hold 19 inmates, but houses 45 on a regular basis. It held 62 inmates on one day last year. The problem of over crowding has been ongoing since 1999. The Northern Cheyenne jail is owned and operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. According to the report , no other tribal jail in the state has the same level of crowding.
