The case of a South Dakota rancher whose 44 cattle were poisoned and killed last Halloween remains unsolved. Efforts by the Department of Criminal Investigation has not been able to identify those responsible for killing Bernard Donahue’s cattle.
When a veterinarian arrived to inspect the condition of the animals, he observed that the water tank smelled so bad his nose burned. Authorities collected samples for testing but were unable to determine what chemical might have been used.
Suspecting ammonia, investigators concluded that the source chemical would have dissolved, making identifying what it was extremely difficult.
Donahue suspects that his landlord may have been the intended target as the owners received a threatening letter stating “You two are the most hated two in the area…I know karma comes around…. I hope you get what you deserve.” The letter was turned over to authorities and Donahue is offering a $5,000 reward for info leading to an arrest.
