If a fire strikes in Dawson County, the West Glendive Fire Department (WGFD) shows up to fight it. However, if the fire is on a home, vehicle, equipment, barn or haystack, they are under no legal obligation to do so. With the help of an established Dawson County Rural Fire Department, County Commissioners hope to resolve that.
Dawson County currently contracts with the WGFD to protect Wildland Fire Protection Area, which only stipulates that wildland fires need to be fought. That being said, fire department officials ensure Dawson County residents that they respond to all fire calls.
In the absence of the new district, the commissioners are worried about the ability to continue providing fire protection. Currently, the mostly volunteer-led department protects more than 2,400 square miles of territory in Eastern Montana.
