A plane crashed onto I-90 near Lookout Pass on the Montana Idaho border at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon, blocking eastbound traffic until Montana Highway Patrol arrived.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the type of aircraft, only that it was small enough that eastbound traffic at mile marker 0 were still able to pass in the median once authorities could secure the area. The pass runs through the Rocky Mountains with a steep climb on one side and a sheer drop on the other, making rescue and cleanup efforts extremely difficult.
Police racing to the scene expressed concern with local media outlets and spectators making their way up to Lookout Pass and adding to the congestion. They advised anyone crossing the border on I-90 to expect significant delays.
